I live and work in Stromness, the second largest town in the Orkney Islands, but I was brought up in Stronsay, one of the North Isles with a population of around 350 people. It was an amazing place to grow up — exposed to the elements, with dramatic weather and wild seas. There was nothing I loved more than watching the sea on a stormy day.
Our school combined both Primary and Secondary pupils, with around 60 children aged 5–16. Several teachers travelled daily from the Mainland by plane, including the Art, Music, PE and French teachers. Art was only one hour a week, but I loved every minute of it.
After leaving school, I completed a Care course before qualifying as a hairdresser, a career I followed until I had my three children. During my years as a stay-at-home mum, I began spending more time creating art.
Over the years I have experimented with many different styles but painting on canvas and creating paper collages remain my favourites. I love texture and the depth it brings to a piece.
I am hugely inspired by my surroundings. We are incredibly lucky to live in a place with such a variety of inspiring landscapes and wildlife — from the old, cobbled streets of Stromness to the ever-changing skies and rough seas around us. The history of Orkney, its wildlife and coastline all influence my work. Equally, I love the scenery of the Scottish mainland too — the hills, trees and lochs. I think this is why my work is so varied; I find inspiration everywhere.
I hope you enjoy my art. It is quite literally a reflection of me, my surroundings and the things I love, created on a surface for us both to enjoy.
